Four Last Songs
— Intermission of 20 min —

Béla Bartók

Concerto for Orchestra, Sz. 116
Total approximate duration: 120 min

Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs, written in the final phase of the composer’s life, are generally understood both as a peaceful farewell – offering his last contribution to the lied repertoire – and as a final love letter addressed to his wife of six decades, the soprano Pauline de Ahna. In this concert by the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the songs will be interpreted by Christina Nilsson, the singer who came to prominence as Aida in 2018 at the Royal Swedish Opera. Under the direction of Joshua Weilerstein, the programme also includes Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra.
