A programme that includes some of the most exciting new music. Aeriality, by Anna Thorvaldsdottir, from Iceland, was released on disc at the end of 2014, in time to be featured in the New Yorker’s and the Boston Globe’s choices of the year. Anthology of Fantastic Zoology by the American Mason Bates is inspired by Jorge Luis Borges’s Anthology of Fantastic Zoology and is described by the composer as “a compendium of mythical creatures … a kind of psychedelic Carnival of the Animals.” Step Right Up, by Vasco Mendonça, a work that will also be recorded, is a commission by the Gulbenkian Foundation from a composer who is already a key voice in contemporary Portuguese and European music.
