Born in Bissau in an auspicious period when the former Portuguese colony was gearing up for independence, the Guinea Bissau singer Eneida Marta sings of liberty, love and other matters important in life. Her first record, Nô Storia, dates back to 2001 and her fourth and most recent album, Nha Sunhu, is from 2015. Drawing upon the melodies from her own Guinean identity and interweaving the local genre of Gumbé with jazz, Eneida Marta has built her own sound that takes as its reference the classical names in her country’s music such as José Carlos Shewarz, Ernesto Dabo and Zé Manel, among others.

At the Gulbenkian Foundation, she is accompanied by an acoustic quartet with a piano/guitar, kora, percussion and bass, revisiting themes from her repertoire with new arrangements.
