Sun of Goldfinger

In an interview about The Next Day, his second to last studio album, David Bowie explained his choice of guitarist in these terms: “His work is very spiritual and has a fragile, ephemeral quality that I adore.” That’s how he described David Torn, whom he dubbed the “Yo-Yo Ma of guitar”. Torn is partial to creating superb landscapes, as if he were playing remnants of rock, which, in the Sun of Goldfinger trio alongside Tim Berne and Ches Smith, two of the most brilliant names in contemporary jazz, takes on a denseness that makes this music different from anything we’ve heard before.
