It is no coincidence that the Cuarteto Casals has waited for its 20th anniversary to finally tackle the complete Beethoven String Quartets. This ambitious cycle is a true sign of maturity, and is presented in the Gulbenkian Music season in three key events. According to the magazine Clásica2, in an article dedicated to the Spanish ensemble, this set of works by Beethoven “continues to be the final test to show that a string quartet has ascended to the highest echelon of its art”, since it presents “all the imaginable challenges, both technical and conceptual.”
