Founded by poet Rina Durante and musician Daniele Durante in 1975, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino revives the traditional sound of the Italian region of Salento, the pizzica, associated with the ritual of tarantism — ceremonial music said to free women afflicted by spiritual maladies supposedly caused by the bite of the tarantula. Il Mito, the album that the ensemble now directed by Mauro Durante brings to Gulbenkian Music, reinterprets fifty years of a poignant repertoire, transforming the captivating traditional pizzica into a decisively contemporary sound world.
