Having established from the outset his strong presence on stage in performances such as Falstaff and Figaro, the Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel rose to a position of true star of the world of opera, going on to interpret Wagnerian characters like Wotan and Hans Sachs . “Gigantic in stature and personality, with a booming voice that is effortlessly flexible and expressive” (Independent), Terfel has the ability to surprise the audience even in the most familiar roles. Conductor Gareth Jones, another Welshman, regularly works with Terfel. To mark the singer’s 50th birthday in 2015, he conducted the opera Tosca at the Wales Millennium Centre.
