Johannes Brahms

Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, op. 15
— Intermission of 20 min —

Joly Braga Santos

Symphony No. 4 in E minor, op. 16
Total approximate duration: 120 min

Characteristic of a youthful work, Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1 is grounded in exuberance filled with artistic ambition and personal assertion. It is a work of enormous impact and emotional investment, oscillating between grandeur and introspection, developed from a sonata for two pianos written in 1854 and subsequently orchestrated and refined by the German composer over the following years. This programme also includes Joly Braga Santos’s Symphony No. 4, a work that closes a crucial creative cycle in the Portuguese composer’s career.
