This concert marks the return to the Gulbenkian Orchestra of its emeritus conductor, Lawrence Foster, here accompanied by one of his favourite soloists. Despite his lush virtuosic technique, Arcadi Volodos always shows himself capable of the greatest lyricism and an interpretive rigour that is never overshadowed by the ego. Attentive to the silence between the notes, he told the Fono Forum magazine that he believes that progressive deafness in the final phase of Beethoven’s life led the composer to «listen more deeply to his inner voice».
