Return of the conductor Michel Corboz to the majestic oratorio that J. S. Bach dedicated to the suffering and death of Christ, according to the Gospel of St. Matthew. This is no novelty in Corboz’s long career with Gulbenkian Music, but the profuse wealth of Bach’s work always comes across as if it had never been heard before, with the same greatness of revelation. On this occasion, the staging by the Italian Romeo Castellucci, one of the most renowned and creative European theatre directors of the day, promises to further extend the understanding of one of the most beautiful and intense works ever.
