Modern Collection – Temporary Exhibitions Gallery & Multipurpose Room R. Dr. Nicolau Bettencourt, LisbonThe exhibition Lines of Time. The Gulbenkian Collections. Contemporary Paths takes, as its point of departure, the year 1956, when the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation was established.
From that date, this exhibition takes us back 60 years to 1896 and guides us up to the present day, providing a space for dialogues and links between two collections: the collection acquired by Calouste S. Gulbenkian up to 1955 and the Modern Collection, comprised of works ranging from the 20th century to the current day.
Based on two different concepts of modernity in the 20th century, the first 60 years bring to light Calouste Gulbenkian’s preferences and the close contact he enjoyed with certain artists of his time, namely Rodin and Lalique as well as various designers. At the same time, his collection, marked by new artistic expressions, reflects the world in which he lived. In a playful and at times unconventional manner, this celebration of the 60 years of the Foundation brings about an unexpected approximation between the two collections and the unlikely coincidences that result from it.
By establishing points of convergence or divergence the exhibition seeks to encourage unexpected linkages on various levels.
