Pintura, Escultura, Desenho e Gravura de Svend Wiig Hansen

Exposição itinerante que reuniu 151 obras do artista dinamarquês Svend Wiig Hansen (1922-1997), representativas de vinte e cinco anos de atividade artística. Resultante de uma parceria entre a Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian e o artista, a mostra reuniu um conjunto de peças de pintura, escultura, desenho e gravura.

Itinerant exhibition that brought together 151 works by the Danish artist Svend Wiig Hansen (1922-1997), representing twenty-five years of artistic activity. Resulting from a partnership between the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the artist, the exhibition brought together a set of paintings, sculptures, drawings and engravings.

Exposição itinerante dedicada à obra do artista expressionista dinamarquês Svend Wiig Hansen (1922-1997). Resultou da iniciativa do Ministério da Cultura da Dinamarca e do Komiteen for Internationale Kunstudstillinger, ficando a organização e a montagem da exposição a cargo da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (FCG), através do seu Serviço de Exposições e Museografia, e do próprio artista.

Comissariado por Hanne-Lisbeth Rasmussen, o projeto expositivo reuniu um total de 151 obras em diversos suportes (pintura, escultura, desenho e gravura), abrangendo um período de 25 anos da atividade artística de Wiig Hansen.

Esta exposição revestiu-se de particular importância, porque representou o ponto de partida para o intercâmbio cultural entre a FCG e a Dinamarca, que se intensificaria nos anos seguintes: «A exposição deste artista dinamarquês merece-nos o melhor interesse, pois trata-se de um artista de grande projecção internacional, sobre o qual o Doutor José-Augusto França já escreveu um livro, editado na Dinamarca. Por outro lado, seria uma excelente oportunidade para a Fundação, a nível das artes plásticas, estabelece[r] o seu primeiro contacto com aquele país, cuja actividade neste sector é sempre de elevada qualidade.» (Apontamento do Serviço de Exposições e Museografia, 26 ago. 1977, Arquivos Gulbenkian, SEM 00091)

O catálogo da exposição integrou textos do crítico de arte José-Augusto França, do pintor Lima de Freitas e do escritor e jornalista dinamarquês Bent Irve, que sintetizaria assim o trabalho do artista: «As violentas irradiações do temperamento de Svend Wiig Hansen dissimulam uma mestria física fundamental. A impressão de experimentar e de gerar que se propaga numa necessidade de violência física e mental e que, na nossa sociedade, apenas é tolerada nas crianças.» (Svend Wiig Hansen, 1978)

Já o crítico José-Augusto França traçaria uma genealogia do gesto expressionista de Hansen, identificando-o como herdeiro do expressionismo do grupo CoBrA e reconhecendo-lhe influências marcadamente literárias.

No âmbito da exposição, Svend Wiig Hansen realizou ainda um happening, durante o qual o artista executava um painel ao mesmo tempo que era acompanhado ao piano pelo músico e compositor Jorge Peixinho.

A exposição, que recebeu grande atenção por parte da imprensa nacional, incluindo a insular, depois da sua exibição em Lisboa foi apresentada em Espanha, seguindo-se apresentações noutras cidades europeias.

Travelling exhibition dedicated to the work of Danish expressionist artist Svend Wiig Hansen (1922-1997). The event is was an initiative of the Danish Ministry of Culture and Komiteen for Internationale Kunstudstillinger, with the organisation and assembly of the exhibition entrusted to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (FCG), by way of its Exhibitions and Museography Department, and the artist himself.

Curated by Hanne-Lisbeth Rasmussen, the exhibition brought together a total of 151 pieces using different media – painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking – covering a period of 25 years of Wiig Hansen’s artistic activity.

The exhibition was particularly important because it represented the starting point for cultural exchange between FCG and Denmark, which would become more intense in the following years:

“The exhibition of this Danish artist was very interesting to us, because it is an artist with extensive international projection, about whom José-Augusto França has written a book, published in Denmark. On the other hand, it would be an excellent opportunity for the Foundation in terms of visual arts, [which] would establish the first contact with that country, whose activity in this sector is always of high quality” (Note by the Exhibitions and Museography Department, 26 Aug. 1977, Gulbenkian Archives, SEM 00091).

Critical reception of the exhibition was quite satisfactory, and it received extensive attention from the national press, including press in the Portuguese islands.

The exhibition catalogue included texts by Danish writer and journalist Bent Irve (1934), Portuguese art historian and critic José-Augusto França (1922) and painter Lima de Freitas (1927-1998).

Bent Irve summarised the meaning of the works exhibited in the following way:

“The violent irradiations of Svend Wiig Hansen’s temperament mask a fundamental physical mastery. The impression of experimenting and generating that is driven in a need for physical and mental violence and that, in our society, is tolerated only in children” (Svend Wiig Hansen, 1978).

Critic José-Augusto França would outline a genealogy of Hansen’s expressionist movements as, to a certain extent, the heir of the expressionism of the CoBrA group, also mentioning markedly literary influences.

As part of the exhibition, Svend Wiig Hansen also carried out a happening that involved producing a panel while the artist was accompanied on the piano by musician and composer Jorge Peixinho (1940-1995).

After being shown in Lisbon, it opened in Spain, followed by other European cities.
