Gulbenkian Orchestra
In 1962, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation decided to establish a permanent orchestral ensemble. Originally with only twelve musicians (strings and continuo) it was named “Orquestra de Câmara Gulbenkian”. This collective was successively enlarged and today the “Orquestra Gulbenkian” (the name it has adopted since 1971) has a permanent body of sixty instrumentalists, a number that can be expanded depending on the repertoire.
This structure allows the Gulbenkian Orchestra to interpret works from the Baroque and Classical periods, a significant part of 19th century orchestral literature and much of the music of the 20th century, including works belonging to the current repertoire of the traditional symphonic orchestras. In each season, the orchestra performs on a regular series of concerts at the Gulbenkian Grand Auditorium in Lisbon, where it has had the opportunity of working together with some of leading names of the world of music (conductors and soloists). It has also performed on numerous locations all over Portugal, in an effort to decentralize music and culture.
The orchestra has been constantly expanding its activities in the international level, performing in Europe, Asia Africa, and the Americas. In the recording field, Orquestra Gulbenkian is associated to labels as Philips, Deutsche Grammophon, Hyperion, Teldec, Erato, Adès, Nimbus, Lyrinx, Naïve and Pentatone, among others, and this activity was recognized with several international prizes.

Anthony Gabriele

Throughout his extraordinary career, Anthony Gabriele has proven himself limitless in terms of genre, travelling the world to perform in over 20 countries, with over 50 orchestras.
Recent and upcoming performances with multi-platinum singer-song writer Anastacia, and repeat engagements with Irish singer-song writer Ronan Keating have established Anthony as the “cross-over” conductor of choice and broadcast his international reputation for conducting with tremendous passion, born of a profound knowledge and understanding of the repertoire.
Anthony’s unrivalled expertise as a conductor of Film with Orchestra has now reached 40 titles, with six World Premiere performances including: John Williams’ score for Superman, and his Oscar winning adaptation of Jerry Bock’s score for Fiddler on the Roof; Thomas Newman’s score for James Bond: Spectre; the silent film Moby Dick; Bruno Coulais’ heartrending music for Les Choristes; Lorne Balfe’s imaginative score for Life on Our Planet, and the European/UK Premiere of Tan Dun’s score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
As a Musical Director on London’s West End, and internationally, his credits include Sweeney Todd, The Lion King, CATS, The Phantom of the Opera, Grease, The Wizard of Oz, Funny Girl, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Sound of Music and Evita. As a past prize winner in the international opera conducting competition Blue Danube Musik Impresario (Vienna), Anthony’s opera credits include Don Carlo, La traviata, La bohème, Don Giovanni and Madama Butterfly.
Anthony’s exciting 2025/2026 season includes performances at London’s Royal Albert Hall, Amsterdam’s Het Concertgebouw, and the Seoul Arts Centre, and in April, he is back on stage with multi-platinum singer song writer, Anastacia, for new performances of Anastacia – Live at the Symphony, at Lucerne’s KKL. In addition to repeat engagements with orchestras including London’s Philharmonia, the Orquestra Gulbenkian (Lisbon), the Korean National Symphony, Turku Philharmonic, and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Anthony will also make his debut with orchestras in Canada, Spain, The Netherlands, and Switzerland.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
When the New York Philharmonic presented a tribute to composer John Williams in 2023, Steven Spielberg showed the opening scenes of Raiders of the Lost Ark without its soundtrack. He then screened the same images accompanied by Williams’s score performed live by the orchestra. ‘As if by magic,’ wrote The New York Times, ‘the adventurous spirit of the film was restored.’ John Williams’s music is an essential part of Spielberg’s cinema, and we shall witness it with the Gulbenkian Orchestra bringing that extraordinary dimension to the exploits of Indiana Jones.
