Lourdes Castro in MUDAS
On 9 December 2022, MUDAS launched the exhibition Como uma ilha sobre o mar: Lourdes Castro (Like an island over the sea: Lourdes Castro), a tribute to the life and artistic work of Lourdes Castro (1930-2022). Curated by Márcia de Sousa, director of the museum, the exhibition brings together around 300 pieces from various national collections, both public and private, and previously unseen documentation from Lourdes Castro’s archive, thus seeking to show the artist’s work as comprehensively as possible.
The CAM is participating in this exhibition through the loan of three works from its collection: the acrylic painting Auto-Retrato (Self Portrait), from 1954, Caixa Madeira (Wooden Box, 1963), an assemblage with pieces of wood glued to a box, also made of wood, and In the Café (1964), composed of two sheets of plexiglass that accentuate the silhouettes of two figures and develop the theme of the shadow in the artist’s work.
The exhibition commemorates the work of an emblematic artist in Portuguese art and sets out to follow Lourdes Castro’s entire career, from the moment she left Madeira to study in Lisbon and live in Paris and Berlin, to her return, later in life, to her native island, where she passed away on 8 January 2022.
