Helena Almeida in São Paulo
Between June and September 2023, the Instituto Moreira Salles in São Paulo will host the first solo exhibition of Helena Almeida‘s (1934-2018) work in Brazil. Curated by Isabel Carlos, former director of CAM, the exhibition presents a selection of photographs, drawings and videos which the artist developed during her five-decade career between 1969 and 2018.
The CAM Collection has 16 works by the artist, four of which will travel to São Paulo to be presented in this exhibition. The works on loan include two photographs from the series Seduzir [Seduce] (2002), the photograph Tela Habitada [Inhabited Canvas] (1976), and the video Ouve-me [Listen to Me] (1979), all self-representations by the artist.
The exhibition also includes pieces from other important Portuguese collections, such as those of Caixa Geral de Depósitos, the Serralves Foundation and Altice. Helena Almeida’s work invariably questions the limits of artworks themselves and reflects on her condition as a woman artist, confirming her historical relevance in the national and international artistic field.
The exhibition will be open to visitors until 24 September 2023.
