Dzudza, by Idio Chichava

Event Slider

Choreographer Idio Chichava, winner of the Salavisa European Dance Award, presents Dzudza, a dance choreography for twelve performers, inspired by the mood of the Xiquelene market, in the suburbs of Maputo.

Drawing on the sounds, rhythms and collective energy of urban life, the performance reflects on resilience in a world marked by borders, violence and displacement.

Through intense physicality, rhythmic steps, collective movements and sung voices, the performers create ever-changing images, ranging from tension to tenderness and celebration.

On stage, the body emerges as a source of strength, memory and connection: it dances, sings, resists and celebrates, creating a collective presence of great intensity.

The capulana — a printed fabric associated with identity, protection and a sense of belonging — also takes centre stage, appearing as a costume, an extension of the body and a medium for movement.

Dzudza is Maputo seen from the suburbs: vibrant, restless and alive.

This performance is part of the Alkantara Festival 2026, and is presented in the context of the Salavisa European Dance Award. It will be followed by the ceremony of the Salavisa European Dance Award (free admission).
