Xenakis and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

Encouraging the creation and dissemination of contemporary music has been, from early on, a priority of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Iannis Xenakis was one of the greatest beneficiaries of this action through commissions, the inclusion of many of his Portuguese and world premieres in the Foundation’s musical programming, or the promotion of events disseminating his legacy.

The Gulbenkian Archives hold unpublished materials that reveal the relationship between Xenakis and the Gulbenkian Foundation. The Art Library and Archives provides, within the context of the documentary display Xenakis and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, audio recordings extracts of the Portuguese premieres of Nuits, Aroura, Synaphaï, Oresteïa, Ikhoor, Mikka-S, Pléïades and A l’Île de Gorée, and of the world premieres of Cendrées and Tetras, as well as the full audio recording of the conference Formalisations en musique.
