Processing and availability of the Carlos de Azevedo Archive
This archive, donated by the family to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 2018, includes more than 5,200 documents, containing correspondence, photographs and handwritten and typescript texts collected by the researcher during his professional career.
The conservation actions carried out consisted of the cleaning of all the specimens, their packing in appropriate containers and the digitization of a small set of 37 architectural drawings that were in a deteriorated state of conservation.
In terms of cataloguing, a preprocessing of all the documentation was undertaken, within the scope of which all the documents were described in a synthetic way. The Carlos de Azevedo Archive can now be searched through the Art Library catalogue.
The connections that Carlos de Azevedo established throughout his academic career, both abroad and in Portugal, and his research into the history of civil architecture in Portugal in the modern period and the history of Portuguese heritage in the Orient, place him as a personality of singular importance in the historiography of Portuguese art of the second half of the 20th century. His Archive is therefore of special interest for the research of the art of the 16th to 18th centuries.
