Álvaro Siza donates new documents

At Álvaro Siza’s request, the Gulbenkian Art Library has recently incorporated two new original documents by the architect: a sketchbook related to the design of the Portugal Pavilion at Expo’98, and an original drawing created for the “Siza” exhibition, held at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation between May and August 2024.

This donation follows previous ones made between 2018 and 2023, which included, on the one hand, a significant number of models and photographic documentation relating to various projects that had been part of the original donation in 2015, and, on the other hand, the project for the Manuel Cargaleiro III Foundation (Quinta da Fidalga), in Seixal.

The Álvaro Siza archive held at the Gulbenkian Art Library currently comprises 40 projects, including landmark works such as the Church of Santa Maria and Parish Centre in Marco de Canaveses, the University of Aveiro Library, the Terraços de Bragança housing complex in Lisbon, as well as projects commissioned by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, such as the stands representing it at the Frankfurt (1997) and Paris (1998) Book Fairs, and the set design for the ballet Four opera arias, performed by the Gulbenkian Ballet in 1996.

This archival collection, which includes around 56,000 documents of various types (architectural and technical drawings, sketches, written descriptions, correspondence, photographic documentation, models, among others), is an essential resource for the study of Álvaro Siza’s work and of Portuguese architecture from the 20th and 21st centuries.

The recently added documents have already been catalogued and are available for research in the online catalogue and for consultation at the Art Library and Archives.
