The exhibition Memory and myths – the bull in Jorge Vieira’s work, currently open to the public at the Centro de Arqueologia e Artes, in Beja, has, among the exhibited pieces, six drawings and a drawing pad by the sculptor, as well as 16 digital reproductions of other documents that integrate the Jorge Vieira Estate, donated to the Art Library in 2021.

Focusing on the figure of the bull, which Jorge Vieira drew and sculpted throughout his work, this exhibition, organized by the Municipality of Beja/Jorge Vieira Museum and the Centre for Archaeology and Arts of the capital of Baixo Alentejo, commemorates his centenary.

In the words of the responsible curator, the art historian Raquel Henriques da Silva, for the sculptor “modernity had relevant roots, for example in ancient sculpture and ceramics from the Mediterranean area. Therefore, his Bulls are a mysterious link, related to an ancient chain of symbols that had a dynamic stage in Beja”.

The sculptor Jorge Vieira was born in Lisbon on 16th November 1922 and died in Estremoz on 23rd December 1998.
