Luís Cristino da Silva Archive, 1921-1976

Luís Cristino da SilvaArchitecture and design collections and archives

A collection resulting from the activity of architect Luís Cristino da Silva, one of the protagonists of the first generation of Portuguese modernists. His main projects include the Cineteatro Capitólio (1926-1929), the Lisbon Pavilion of Honour for the Portuguese World Exhibition (1940) and the architectural layout of Praça do Areeiro (1941-1960).

Luís Cristino da Silva (1896-1976) was born in Lisbon, the son and grandson of painters – his grandfather was the painter João Cristino da Silva (1820-1877) and his father, the painter and teacher João Ribeiro Cristino (1858-1948).

In 1919 he graduated in architecture from the Escola de Belas Artes of Lisboa (Lisbon School of Fine Arts), and in 1920 he travelled to Paris to improve his professional and artistic skills.

After a short stay in Rome, he returned to Lisbon in 1925 and began designing the Capitólio cinema the following year.

In 1940, he collaborated on the Portuguese World Exhibition, where he designed the Lisbon Pavilion of Honour. He was the chief architect of the university city of Coimbra (1948).

In Lisbon, his projects for Praça do Areeiro (1941-1960) and for the extension of Avenida da Liberdade (1932-1971) are also noteworthy, the latter of which was never achieved.

The collection, produced between 1921 and 1976, consists of 114 architectural projects corresponding to 10,652 documents, including architectural drawings, photographs and postcards, resulting from the architect’s professional, academic and personal activities.

The collection was donated by the family to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 1982.
