This collection contains part of the personal library of the essayist, historian, and art critic José Augusto França, who donated it to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 1992. It consists of 3,800 items: 1,305 press cuttings, with articles written in Portuguese and foreign newspapers, and 2,495 monographs, exhibition catalogues and magazines.

Collection donated by the critic and art historian José Augusto França in 1992 to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. It comprises a set of documentation composed of his writings from the end of the 1950s to the early 1990s, consisting of 3,800 documents, including national and foreign periodicals, monographs, exhibition catalogues and an important set of press clippings, which have been digitalized.

The monographs include titles such as Lisboa pombalina e o iluminismo (1965), A arte em Portugal no século XIX (1966) and A arte em Portugal no século XX (1974), reference works on the history of Portuguese art, his first novel, Natureza morta (1949), and the biography Charles Chaplin: o “self-made-myth” (1963), among other titles.

This collection also includes works by other authors, such as Ernesto de Sousa, Luis Cristino da Silva, Jaime Reis, Alain Auclaire, Mário Chicó and Pierre Francastel, some of which with dedications.
