Ana Hatherly Collection
Personal libraries
A collection put together by Ana Hatherly, a teacher, writer, and artist who was one of the faces of the theorisation and dissemination of the “Experimental Poetry Movement” during the 60s and 70s in Portugal.
It includes not only the author’s literary works, but also titles by other Portuguese and Brazilian authors of visual and experimental poetry. Most of these works are autographed, with dedications to Ana Hatherly.
Ana Hatherly (Porto, 1929 – Lisbon, 2015) was closely linked to some of the avant-garde manifestations that took place in the Portuguese artistic and literary scene from the 1960s onwards. With a degree in Germanic Philology from the Faculdade de Letras of the Universidade de Lisboa and a PhD in Hispanic Literatures from the University of Berkeley, she was a full professor of Portuguese Literature at the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas of the Universidade Nova of Lisbon.
Along with Ernesto Melo e Castro, Ana Hatherly was the one who worked hardest to theorise and disseminate the “Experimental Poetry Movement” – a new form of poetic expression of an avant-garde nature that developed and established itself in Portugal during the 1960s and 70s –participating in its activities and taking part in visual poetry exhibitions both at home and abroad.
This collection was donated by Ana Hatherly to the Art Library between 2007 and 2013 and consists of around 550 copies, including monographs and periodicals. The monographs include not only the author’s literary works – her first book of poetry, Um ritmo perdido, was published in 1958, and her first work of fiction, O mestre, in 1963 – but also titles by other significant names in visual and experimental poetry in Portugal, such as Ernesto de Melo e Castro and José Alberto Marques.
This collection also includes works by foreign authors such as Arrigo Lora-Totino, an Italian poet and artist, and Haroldo de Campos, a Brazilian poet. Most of these works are autographed, with dedications to the author.
