Júlio Moreira

1930 – 2024

Designer, Landscape architect
He graduated in Agronomy and Landscape Architecture. He has developed architectural projects all over the country, especially after setting up his company, " Paisagem – Gabinete de Estudos de Planeamento Lda" (1974-2012), and was the author of the Landscape Design exhibition, part of the 2nd Exhibition of Portuguese Design (1973), which was the first major demonstration of ecological awareness in Portugal.  At the same time, Júlio Moreira developed his careers as a critic (debating environmental awareness and cultural intervention) and novelist.

Júlio Moreira was born in Lisbon in 1930, where he lived and worked.

He graduated in Agricultural Engineering from the Instituto Superior de Agronomia and in Landscape Architecture from the Centre for Landscape Architecture Studies.

He began his career at Hoffmann La Roche in Portugal, having worked in several European and South American countries.

From 1974 onwards, he devoted himself exclusively to drawing up landscape architecture projects and land-use plans, founding the landscape architecture studio “Paisagem – Gabinete de Estudos de Planeamento, Lda” that same year. With its participation in the 2nd Exhibition of Portuguese Design, the studio organised the Landscape Design exhibition, considered the first consistent manifestation of ecological awareness in Portugal, and as part of which it wrote the book O mundo é a nossa casa, with drawings by Cristina Reis. This book was seized and destroyed by order of Marcelo Caetano, head of the government at the time.

His professional activity extended to the production of landscape architecture and planning projects, both individually and as part of larger teams. These projects included interventions in industrial spaces (the areas surrounding the workers’ neighbourhood “A Tabaqueira”, 1966), collaborations on plans for spaces of heritage interest (the reconversion plan for the Mosteiro de Alcobaça, 1995), and projects around reserved spaces such as cemeteries (Carnide, 1985 and Lumiar, 1999).

At the same time, Júlio Moreira developed his careers as a critic (debating environmental awareness and cultural intervention) and novelist.

In 2012, the firm “Paisagem Lda” closed and entrusted its archive to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The collection belongs to the Gulbenkian Art Library and Archives and is currently being processed.
