Exhibition “Paula Rego, Power Games”

Original documents by Paula Rego from the Gulbenkian Archives on display at the Kunstmuseum Basel.

The exhibition “Paula Rego, Power Games”, open to the public at the Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland, between 28 September and 2 February 2025, shows some original documents produced by the artist as part of her research carried out in London between 1976 and 1978 on The illustration of the collective unconscious in traditional tales, work which was supported by the Fine Arts Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

This set of documents includes: two handwritten notebooks with collages – Some fairy tale illustrators 1621-1939; a report consisting of the work Illustrators of French fairy tales, the text Branca Flor, and photographs of watercolours and figures from other fairy tales. The application form for the Gulbenkian scholarship will also be presented.

This exhibition, the artist’s first in Switzerland, will also feature some works from the collection of the Centro de Arte Moderna, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, including Angel.
