Rose-ringed Parakeet

Psittacula krameri

The Rose-ringed Parakeet is a bird of the parrot family native to the Afrotropical Region and South Asia. It occurs in several European countries as a result of captivity leaks and/ or introductions and in Portugal was first recorded in the wild in the 1980s.

Its scientific name has this meaning: the name of the genus Psittacula derives from the Latin term psittacus that means parrot and krameri is an allusion to Wilhelm H. Kramer, Austrian naturalist of the eighteenth century who described the genus.
