A scientific bird ringing workshop is held at the Gulbenkian Garden every year, in late summer or early autumn. Scientific bird ringing is a technique used in ornithology and involves applying a unique, numbered ring to a bird’s leg. It allows us to study aspects of the biology, ecology, behaviour and movements of wild birds.

However, the most emblematic goal of bird ringing lies in its relevance for understanding migrations: ringing birds in a given location and recapturing them later on somewhere else will allow us to know their areas of origin and destination. Over the last four years, tits, amethyst woodstars, common blackbirds, blackcaps, jays, among others, have been ringed in this garden.
