The first cohort

Our Fellows, 2026/27

The Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study (GIAS) is pleased to announce the list of fellows selected for the 2026/27 academic year.

Following a highly competitive international call, fifteen scholars have been invited to join the Institute’s inaugural cohort.

The Institute was designed to enable scholars to pursue research of their own choosing, for limited periods of time, in a congenial intellectual environment with few regular obligations. Bringing together researchers from a wide range of disciplines, the cohort reflects the Institute’s commitment to intellectual diversity and exchange across fields and nationalities. The cohort comprises fellows affiliated with leading universities, as well as independent scholars.

The Institute will host a total of fifteen fellows over the course of the 2026/27 academic year, with ten or eleven in residence at any given time, ensuring a stable and continuous intellectual community.

During their residency, fellows will pursue individual research projects while contributing to the intellectual life of the Institute through informal conversations and debates, and occasional public events. The GIAS remains committed to providing scholars with time, space, and intellectual freedom, and is looking forward to welcoming to Lisbon its first cohort, in September 2026.
