Many applications, many countries, many fields
GIAS Fellowship applications 2026/7
Applications for the first ten fellowships to be granted by the GIAS, in the academic year 2026/7, have closed on October 15th. We have received 459 applications from 65 countries, of all five continents. Most candidates come from the United States (18%), followed by Brazil (15%), Portugal (10%), Italy and the United Kingdom (5% each). A significant number of applications from Asia (including India and Japan), Africa (mostly from Mozambique and Nigeria), and Australia were also received. These are encouraging figures, showing the international scope of the Institute.
The GIAS considers applications from all fields, provided they have no applied dimensions or laboratorial requirements. Accordingly, the applications received this year were very diverse. The majority, evenly divided, was from the Humanities and the Social Sciences; but there was also a significant contingent from the various STEM areas, and from Law, and Economics. Most candidates are currently affiliated with institutions of higher learning but, as anticipated, we have also received many applications from independent scholars, professionals and artists, at every stage of their careers.
The applications are currently being reviewed by our Advisory Board. The GIAS cohort for 2026/7 will be announced by mid-April 2026.
