Helena Almeida

Untitled

This serigraph starts, and ends, with the artist’s own body: “I am the canvas”, as she has declared. Photography and painting conjure to create a continuous, undefined space between the body and the pictorial shape, in which only her extremities –foot, hand and head – are discernible. All the rest is a figure-like smear within which the body appears simultaneously covered and immersed.

Photography, the artist’s preferred medium since the 70’s, becomes the arrival point of a process, understood as work, that may take days or months in her studio. Each image, gesture, position, framing, the location from which the photograph will be taken, is firstly thought-out and drawn-out like a movie director plans and eventually draws each movie frame or a drawer conceives a comic strip. Lately, the artist has resorted equally to video to prepare and stage her image-forms, which are completed as photographs or, as in this case, serigraphs.
