Dia Al-Azzawi
The old city
This early painting by Dia Al-Azzawi was exhibited at the Iraqi Artists Society annual exhibition in November 1966. Many of the elements in this painting are derived from popular Iraqi culture and society, including the prevalent crescent motif, which can be viewed as an architectural detail but also closely resembles the Arabic letter nūn. The triangles are inspired by the traditional carpets (or bisāt) of the Iraqi city al-Samāwa. In the centre of the painting, the round shape of the city (like mediaeval Baghdad) is surrounded by the empty background of the desert.
