The piece evokes a closed, cavernous space where masks or ghostly figures emerge with wide, hollow eyes and slightly parted mouths, suggesting a look of surprise or haunting. Some figures maintain a neutral or unreadable expression, while certain faces are so abstract they resist interpretation, reinforcing Fernão’s recurring themes of identity dissolution and existential ambiguity.

Amid these figures appears a kind of fissure, a break in continuity that emphasizes fragmentation. Above it, a matchstick, its seemingly mundane presence acts as a symbolic device, triggering multiple possible readings of the work and creating a play between the everyday and the metaphysical.

At the top, a wire fence: a structure that seems to divide the painting into symbolic zones. This fence creates a boundary between the cave and a desolate space, where a small black void with piercing blue eyes tears through the darkness, drawing the viewer’s gaze toward the central rupture, as if observing the scene below through an opening in the fence.
