Pedro Gomes

Untitled, from the series ‘Habitar’ [Inhabiting]

In this work we find the same technique employed as in the other drawing from the series Habitar [Inhabiting] held by the Centro de Arte Moderna collection (Inv. 96DP1703). Once again based on a photographic image, the work depicts a dense urban panorama, bounded in the distance by the massive volume of an apartment block and other motifs which sometimes seem to suggest background elements or vegetation and at other times built elements, such as the road which can be seen in the foreground – with a car seen from behind –, emphasised by the sinuous design of the barrier which follows the course of the road. The inversion of light values – positive/negative – and the sepia shading achieved through the overlaying of concentric circles made with red, green and black pen strokes, come together to create a distorted portrayal of a specific landscape whose identity is no longer recognisable.
