Francisco Tropa
Scripta
Scripta, by Francisco Tropa, was acquired for the CAM Collection after having been displayed in the exhibition Francisco Tropa. The Pyrgus from Chaves, which was held in the temporary exhibition gallery at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in 2018.
The work is composed of a series of bronze pomegranates and nuts, arranged on a canvas painted with a pattern reminiscent of a deckchair, evoking the idea of collecting objects at the beach and playing games in the sand. The piece also includes a made-to-measure wooden box, common in Francisco Tropa’s works.
Despite being a single piece, Scripta is part of a series developed around the artist’s fascination with games: all the pieces in the series have the same title, an ode to the board games discovered at various points around the Roman Empire, engraved on the floor or on plaques.
Francisco Tropa is interested in the portability and mobility of sculpture and the possibility of repositioning it. With this in mind, his boards do not follow fixed patterns and are arranged differently in each presentation.
