Sérgio Pombo

S/ Título (Barriga)

Created during the years of 1973 and 1974, these pieces can be presented as separate fractions or as a unique piece. The female body is presented as a puzzle, whose parts compel us to an imaginary arrangement of that whole: the woman’s feet with red painted toenails, the bent knees on a stool, either bare or covered only by a short skirt, a belly, a face whose eyes are covered by the frame. The identity is not revealed to us, and it could be any woman…

The revealed body, whose parcels we are invited to assemble in our imagination, is that of a woman who can be predicted as young and beautiful. The beauty is accentuated by the simplicity of her presentation, on a ground plinth in black and white, or inside the white frames – a formal and chromatic reduction that highlights each partial object and endows it with a visible potential for fetishism.

All the characteristics of this body remind us of the female image promoted by advertising and of the eternal youth stereotypes, which, after all, do not change with the passing of time.
