Fernando Lemos

Natal do Talho [Butcher’s Christmas]

The evocation of Christmas in an image of cut up animal carcasses on display in the window of a butcher’s shop is rather bizarre.

However, this was the ‘decoration’ chosen by a butcher on Av. Almirante Reis, in Lisbon, at Christmas time, replacing the traditional nativity figures with animal carcasses that, through their symmetry, guide the observer’s attention to the centre of the image, where we glimpse the simulation of a boxing match between two other animals in a ring decorated with sausages.

The scene was constructed by the butcher with no intention other than to attract customers, but it was Fernando Lemos’s gaze which transferred this intention to an aesthetic proposal, as though it were a ready-made.
