Fernando Lemos

Engenheiro Pilar [Pilar, the Engineer]

Luís Pilar was a civil engineer and, perhaps because he made structures, Fernando Lemos decided to photograph him in a stage set/structure he built himself, which seems to simulate, in the foreground, a proscenium and, on a second plane, a stage supported by two columns (two bound books), standing on top of a sketch (related to engineering?).

The photograph of Luís Pilar appears in the background, his face supported on a glass plate with translucent drip marks and lit from the right-hand side of the image, framed by the two ‘theatre columns’.

It is the drip marks that lend a dreamlike visibility to Pilar’s portrait, giving his appearance on the stage a ghostly dimension, in a true and complex ‘artistic illustration’ (taking the title of the volume on the left-hand side of the image) interpreted by Fernando Lemos.
