Invitation to Visit – Tokyo
The place delineated by this image is the outside, a passage or walkway under the veranda of a house, contained within its own space and therefore interior in relation to it. The walls, corners, steps, windows, banisters and posts appear drawn with precision and contrasting light.
Emphasising the point of view that gives movement to the oblique perspective of the composition, we have the sense that we are looking at a place of shelter and a short path that invite us to travel and inhabit them. Given the attention to the area of shadow, we feel as though the small patch of nature in the distance is the open place from where the light emanates. Indeed, the sobriety and solidity of the architecture, captured in this way, suggest feelings rather than documentary records.
