Lantern district in Kobe

A street in a traditional neighbourhood in a large city might not look any different from a street in any other city, large or small.

The composition captured in this image chooses to focus on a series of paper lanterns, in flattened spherical shapes and with inscriptions in Japanese, viewed in perspective along a street characterised by wooden doors and porches. The setting can be easily identified with the Japanese aesthetic and the single pedestrian shows features of local culture; anonymous, apparently advanced in age, leaning on a crooked branch that he uses as a walking stick, he alone populates a quiet street, a place from which only a small cut-out of sky is visible, but which we perceive to be surrounded by tall trees.
