Fernando Lemos

Auto-Retrato [Self-Portrait]

In this work, Fernando Lemos places in the same composition the three forms of visual expression he practised: drawing, painting and photography.

More than that, the image evokes the confrontation and complementarity that is established between the gestural nature of a painted self-portrait and the automatism of photographic representation, which reveals another element: the brick wall on which the portrait is displayed and which serves as a background.

This juxtaposition of a self-portrait is perhaps not entirely innocent, photographed from the bottom up for emphasis, against the solidity of a brick wall with a small splinter of sky visible in the top right-hand corner. Fernando Lemos certainly did not want to photograph the painted self-portrait alone, but sought to give it a particular intention in this context, leaving it open to interpretations that might relate to his personality or the course of his life.
