Fernando Lemos

Three entrances to Kyoto

In this image, a broad staircase is emphasised by the potential for shade given by its veranda-style roof, which contrasts with the conspicuous light that floods the open space next to it. We see the slanting composition from its lowest point, in a low-angle shot and with an oblique view of the straight lines given by the architecture to the staircase in parallel (pillars, kerb and a kind of handrail) and perpendicular planes (continuation of the building, with some details perceptible). The changing level of the ground is felt as a foundation and explanation of the form, making palpable the intelligence and strength of this architecture. Three possible entries are evoked in the title: via the stairs, via the stones and via the grassy ground.
