Text

The portrait of Matilde Velez Caroço, a friend of Sarah Affonso, like most of the portraits painted by the artist, presents a deliberate pose. Encouraged by the idea that painting is an intentional record, which can include notes on moments of everyday life, her works stand out above all for evoking sensory and simple environments. In this portrait, for example, we find the figure standing out against a background of soft colour patches, which modulate its volume and define the domestic scene. The quality of the pictorial surface reveals a spontaneous application of oil paint, an aspect that contributes to the representation acquiring an autonomous character in relation to the real situation, which in turn refers to Sarah Affonso's dreamlike universe.
