‘to go to’ among the best exhibitions of the year
The exhibition-dialogue to go to. Jorge Queiroz | Arshile Gorky was picked as one of the best of the year by Luísa Soares Oliveira from the newspaper Público. Curated by Ana Vasconcelos, this exhibition was on display in the temporary exhibitions gallery of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum from 8 July to 17 October 2022, receiving more than 25,000 visitors.
Proposing a dialogue between two artists represented in the CAM Collection – the contemporary Jorge Queiroz and the modern Arshile Gorky – the exhibition brought together around 40 drawings and paintings by both artists, emphasising the similarities and differences between their works and acknowledging Gorky’s influence on the work of Jorge Queiroz, who devised the exhibition space as a tribute to the modern artist.
Queiroz played an essential role in selecting the 16 works by Gorky for the display, a highlight of which was a significant loan from the collection of the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Last Painting (The Black Monk). This work, found on Gorky’s easel following his suicide and regarded as the artist’s final work, rounded off the exhibition in Lisbon.
to go to led to the acquisition of four works by Jorge Queiroz: in 2021, during the preparation for the exhibition, postponed due to the pandemic, the paintings Modo, Mondo and Now I’ve got a witness were incorporated (as well as a work on paper being purchased, a series of 20 drawings that were not shown as part of the exhibition). In 2022, the CAM also acquired Something in Common 2, strengthening the artist’s presence in the Collection, now with a total of five canvases and two works on paper.
The exhibition was received positively by the critics and was mentioned in Público, Expresso, Umbigo Magazine, Sábado and TimeOut, among other publications. The art critic Alexandre Pomar also listed the exhibition as one of the 10 best of the year.
