The cinematic version of the piece, originally commissioned by CAM for the inaugural exhibition of its collection, ‘Tide Line’, is now in the running for the top short film award at one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals.

Having won the Cannes Critics’ Week Grand Prize in 2018 with his satirical feature ‘Diamantino,’ Abrantes later premièred ‘Les Extraordinaires Mésaventures de la Jeune Fille de Pierre’ [The Marvelous Misadventures of the Stone Lady] at the Directors’ Fortnight in 2019.

With ‘Arguments in Favor of Love,’ the artist and filmmaker enters Cannes’ Official Selection for the first time, where his film will vie for the Short Film Palme d’Or.

This is, in Abrantes’ own words, his most personal film to date. A meditation on contemporary existential questions, the story emerges from ghosts in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic future – trapped in relentless discussions about deeply personal conflicts against a backdrop of present-day collective anxieties.

‘Arguments in Favor of Love’ features performances by Jack Haven and Inês Castel-Branco, with music composed by the artist himself. It will première in Cannes on 23 May.
