The exhibition to go to. Jorge Queiroz | Arshile Gorky brings together around 40 works by two artists represented in the CAM Collection: the contemporary artist Jorge Queiroz (Lisbon, 1966) – winner of the first edition of the Sovereign Art Prize – and the modern artist Arshile Gorky (Van, Armenia, 1904-Sherman, Connecticut, USA, 1948), a key figure in American surrealism and abstract expressionism.

The catalogue accompanying this exhibition opens with an introductory text by the director of the CAM, Benjamin Weil, followed by the essay ‘CAP-I-CUA’, by the curator Ana Vasconcelos, exploring the relationships between the two artists’ works.

Alexander Nagel, Craig Hugh Smyth Professor at the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University (NYU), is the author of the essay ‘Excess and Absence’. From his correspondence with Jorge Queiroz, an excerpt by the artist was also selected.

The catalogue also includes images of all the works shown, which come from various national and international collections, finishing with views of the exhibition on display in the Gulbenkian Foundation. The graphic design is by Vera Velez.
