Praneet Soi. Third Factory
Published on the occasion of the exhibition Praneet Soi. Third Factory. From Kashmir to Lisbon via Caldas, this eponymous notebook can be considered a spatial and temporal extension of the project which occupied the Lower Floor Gallery of the Founder’s Collection by artist Praneet Soi (Calcutta, 1971).
The initial and central pages feature double and single-page photographs of the installation alongside general views of the exhibition space, stills of the projections and works of the Gulbenkian Collection. This visual rhythm offers a view of the gallery through the three elements of Praneet Soi’s installation developed in ‘conversation’ with the Founder’s Collection: the importance of the production of tiles in Caldas da Rainha, references to the city of Lisbon and to the tradition of Kashmir manufactures. In the same vein, the text that follows also represents the journey from the project’s origins to its realisation in the Lower Floor Gallery. The text by curator João Carvalho Dias takes us from Srinagar in 2009, when Praneet Soi first came into contact with the 15th-century tiles he used as a reference for the creation of his installations, to the immersive space consciously constructed in the Gulbenkian Museum gallery through the original musical composition of David Maranha. These two moments of the journey, at the beginning and end of the curator’s text, bookend an account of the process of the project’s conception, which was itself integrated into the installation through projections onto Praneet Soi’s structures.
This bilingual edition is published in both Portuguese and English as part of the editorial line of the Conversations series.
