Hugo Canoilas. Sculptured in Darkness
Sculptured in Darkness is a solo exhibition by Hugo Canoilas (Lisbon, 1977) based on a line of investigation that the artist began in 2020, relating to the seabed, one of the most extensive yet unknown territories on Planet Earth. Curated by Rita Fabiana, the exhibition presents an immersive and multi-sensory installation in the Temporary Exhibitions Gallery of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum.
The publication that accompanies the exhibition opens with the text ‘The Gray Beginnings,’ a chapter from The Sea Around Us by the marine biologist, ecologist and writer Rachel Carson (1907-1964). This seminal text, from which the title of the exhibition was taken, is a scientific study that poetically narrates the formation of the ocean, the birthplace of life on Earth. This is also the first time that it will be published in Portugal.
The publication also includes a visual essay by photographer and artist Daniel Malhão, who took images of the exhibition works in the Gulbenkian Park, thereby multiplying the possible relationships we can establish with the works, as well as an introductory text by the CAM director, Benjamin Weil, and an essay by the curator of the exhibition about the artist’s project. The design work is by Márcia Novais.
