The Museu Coleção Berardo, in Lisbon, is the setting for the exhibition Matéria Luminal, curated by Sérgio Mah. The exhibition brings together a selection of works by 38 Portuguese artists, highly diverse in typology and created between the 1960s and the present day. The exhibition ends on 9 January 2022.

The works, some of them previously unseen, are linked by the fact that they explore light and/or its absence, a theme that has been constant throughout the history of art, as well as being central to various other contexts, such as religion, mythology, popular culture, philosophy and literature. In some cases, light is the motif that is portrayed; in others, the pieces in the exhibition emit light themselves.

Many of the artists represented in the exhibition are major names in the Portuguese art scene. The Modern Art Centre is taking part in this project with 15 works of different typologies – from installation to film, as well as painting and drawing – produced by four artists who explore light in their creative process: António Palolo, Fernando Calhau, João Paulo Feliciano and Luís Noronha da Costa.
