The exhibition Paula Rego: The Story of Stories, scheduled to open on 23 December 2022, will be on display at the Pera Museum, in Istanbul, until 30 April 2023. Curated by Alistair Hicks, this is the first solo exhibition of Paula Rego in Turkey and it explores the artist’s work from her earliest pieces from the 1960s, with emphasis on the large-scale paintings she produced during the 1990s, to works made in the 21st century.

The exhibition follows Paula Rego’s artistic journey, highlighting the socio-political context that inspired her works, which are revolutionary in the way they represent women in art. The pieces selected include drawings and paintings in oil, pastel, acrylic and charcoal and portray themes such as oppression, fascism and institutional violence.

The CAM is participating in this exhibition through the loan of two paintings by the artist, both made in 1960: the oil painting S. Vomiting the Pátria , a criticism of Salazar’s dictatorship through the 41 years of the Estado Novo regime in Portugal, and Turkish Bath, a work in acrylic, collage and graphite drawing on paper glued to canvas, which the CAM recently acquired for its collection.
