The exhibition ‘Paula Rego and Adriana Varejão. Between Your Teeth’ is one of Artforum’s choices of the year
Invited by the international magazine Artforum to present her highlights of the year in art and culture, Carla Acevedo-Yates includes the CAM exhibition in a Top Ten that lists other exhibitions, such as that of artist Jack Whitten at MoMA, New York, alongside Kendrick Lamar’s performance at the Superbowl and DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS, the most recent album by Bad Bunny.
This large-scale exhibition, which from April to September this year brought together the work of the two artists, revisiting their processes, interweaving their themes and revitalising their reading, was curated by Adriana Varejão herself, along with CAM curator Helena de Freitas and the curator and researcher Victor Gorgulho.
The Artforum article emphasises its ‘captivating’ staging, which enabled ‘both practices to find points of intersection and formal departure.’ Acevedo-Yates also mentions the dialogue between Paula Rego’s Tríptico (Triptych), from the artist’s emblematic series on abortion, and the works of Adriana Varejão from the series Extirpação do mal (Extirpation of evil), ‘the two macabre works echoing each other.’
At the end of the article, Acevedo-Yates concludes: ‘Visceral and audacious, it was a show whose intense imagery lingered with me.’
